Feb. 22, 1862—(Roland’s brother James was stationed at Ft. Donelson, with the 51st Tenn. Infantry Division) Saturday 22nd. Nashville. We arrived last night and have set up camp. It appears we are not staying for long, as Johnson had decided to regroup further south, rather than defend Nashville. We are likely pulling out tomorrow. Morgan is here with his Lexington Rifles. Feb 11, 1862--Tuesday, 11 February 1862. On the 9 th immediately after breakfast (skipped church again), we moved out in two columns, on the road north toward the Barren River. We crossed this early that morning and continued north for perhaps 15 miles, arriving at the Green River. Since the Green marks our outer line of defense, we were in generally unchartered territory. Tuesday 4th of February. Back at camp in Bowling Green. We have seen the elephant, as they say, and taken our first losses. Regretfully, Captain Jones is dead, killed by a bushwhacker. We brought him back, tied across his saddle. I would be dead myself but for my Bible. Let me explain. The 2nd was cold and rainy, so the ride was pretty miserable.
